Almost, But Not Quite: What West Indies showed India and the rest of the world

MANGESH KULKARNI: A 2-2 draw doesn’t usually produce that kind of mood, but a draw in India, against the reigning T20 World Cup champions, felt like something else entirely.

I keep coming back to one image from the end of this tour: Shai Hope holding the shared trophy with Shreyas Iyer, grinning, joking that he didn’t have enough luggage space to take everything home. A 2-2 draw doesn’t usually produce that kind of mood, but a draw in India, against the reigning T20 World Cup champions, felt like something else entirely.

The five matches in short

India took the first game in Lucknow comfortably, with Iyer making a 42-ball hundred while West Indies were bowled out for 171. Then came Ranchi, which I’ll be telling people about for a long time. India posted 249, West Indies chased it down with nine balls to spare, marking their highest T20I chase ever. Hope made a 45-ball hundred, Rutherford hit 84 off 37, and the pair added 120 for the fourth wicket, setting a West Indies record. It was also India’s first home loss after ten straight wins.
