Garry Sobers: In Memoriam

RAKESH PATHAK: Even if Sobers had never bowled a ball or caught a catch, a Test batting average of 57.78 would have marked him out as an epoch-defining player.

We all have to leave the metaphorical crease at some time, but few can have departed to such global acclaim and reverence as the cricketing colossus who enriched our game, Garfield St Aubrun Sobers of St Michael’s Parish in Barbados.

Alas, I’m just a bit too young to have seen Sobers play. However, that didn’t stop me from trying to imitate his elegantly casual run-up during countless afternoons of back-garden cricket in the 1980s. Even now, at the age of 51, and as one of club cricket’s confirmed number 11s, I still turn up my collar and stroll to the wicket in consciously Sober-esque fashion before being bowled for an inevitable duck.
