The question day three posed was whether Hope and Greaves could convert overnight fifties into something that truly mattered. The answer arrived over the course of a long, absorbing day four that will be remembered for an innings of stature, an unusual dismissal, a captain taken off the field injured, and a match that arrives at day five entirely alive.
West Indies were bowled out for 499, and Sri Lanka closed at 92 for 2 with a lead of 142. A draw remains the most likely outcome. But only just.
Hope and Greaves picked up where they left off: composed, unhurried, and completely untroubled by the Sri Lanka attack. The morning session belonged entirely to them.
Their marathon stand ended at 242 off 459 deliveries, and their centuries came just four overs apart. Hope was the first to raise his bat to the crowd, doing so after 199 deliveries, and Greaves soon matched the feat, only this time off 201 balls. Once again, the two batters were moving in near-perfect synchrony, as they had done for the better part of two days.
