On July 17th 2026, Sir Garfield Sobers passed away at his home in Barbados at the age of 89, eleven days short of his 90th birthday. Cricket West Indies president Kishore Shallow described him as ‘the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen’, and for once, the superlatives felt earned rather than reflexive.
Widely regarded as cricket's greatest ever all-rounder, described by Don Bradman himself as a ‘five-in-one cricketer’, Sobers was not merely West Indies' finest; he was the sport's benchmark for what a complete cricketer could be.
Eight days after he passed, West Indies took the field at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, where the weight of what had just happened was palpable. In tribute to the great man, West Indies played some of the best Test cricket they have produced in a generation.
