After the euphoria of the first Test, day two of the second Test arrived as something altogether more sobering.

West Indies toiled while Sri Lanka accumulated, and by stumps, a true examination of this side was visible on the horizon. They trail by 491 runs, with Campbell and Hodge at the crease after Asitha Fernando claimed the wicket of Brandon King in the final session of the day.

At this point, a draw is probably the best Maroon fans can hope for. Whether West Indies can bat long enough, patiently enough and collectively enough to achieve it will tell us more about how far they have come than any single innings victory could.

Sri Lanka followed up their slow-burn first session, which brought just 64 runs, with a much more industrious second. They added a further 114 runs in the afternoon, taking a firm grip of the second Test in the process.
