West Indies Batting Trends: What Can Statistics Tell Us?
10.10.25, 14:49 Updated 10.10.25, 15:43

West Indies’ decline in Test cricket is not a matter of dispute. This was, after all, the team that went unbeaten for almost two decades until they finally lost a series to Australia in 1995. Since then, their fall has been swift and multifaceted, and the stats back it up.
What follows is a statistical analysis of their performance since 1995/96. The graphs have been created using the Test database created by Cricinfo’s Anantha Narayanan, which itself is built on public Test Scorecard data. Anantha is aware of this project and has been supportive, as he tends to be on most cricket analytics endeavours.
Let’s start with West Indies' home and away performance in Tests since 1996.
In the early 2000s, West Indies batting had the quality of Lara, Chanderpaul, Sarwan, and Gayle to call upon, but the bowling setup lacked the ability to regularly take 20 wickets. The tables have turned in the present day, with any world-class performances coming from the bowlers. Warrican (x2), Seales, and both Josephs have taken 5-wicket hauls in 2025, which means there have been more 5-wicket hauls (5) than fifties (4).
