Circled in ink: Nepal victory makes multiple statements

MANGESH KULKARNI: World Cups are defined by the fine margins. But rather than survive on the fringes of those margins, West Indies have dictated terms.

Some games arrive quietly on the schedule while others are circled in ink. For the West Indies, this was the latter.

The cricketing community had not forgotten that a few months ago, Nepal defeated a West Indies reserve side 2-1 in a bilateral series in Sharjah. The result was widely celebrated, not just as a proud moment for Nepal, but as another talking point in the broader narrative that West Indies cricket was declining towards the standard of Associate nations.

Before this World Cup match, Akeal Hosein was asked about that series in his pre-game press conference. His response was calm, almost understated, as he pointed out that most of the senior players weren’t present in the previous encounter.

His words, rather than feeling defensive, felt noted. And from the first over, it felt like Hosein and the West Indies had not forgotten them.
