I thought the start of 2026 would be quiet. Scotland's men’s team had failed to qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup, leaving this winter’s fixture list empty. It presented an opportunity to focus on the Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers, with Scotland trying to earn a place in the T20 World Cup that will take place in England this June.
Finally, I had a little respite from the barrage of global franchise leagues and hectic West Indies international schedules.
My peaceful plans were thrown out of the window when Bangladesh were abruptly ejected from the World Cup and replaced by Scotland, who were given less than two weeks’ notice. I’m just a fan, so who knows what kind of chaos is erupting in Cricket Scotland’s head office? They have to build a tournament-ready squad from players who would have otherwise been on holiday or in winter nets. And that’s the easy part.
Cricket Scotland also have to plan and book accommodation and travel, and let’s not get started on navigating the notoriously chaotic mess that is India’s visa system. Given the visa delays for players with Pakistani heritage, good luck getting Safyaan Sharif a visa in time for the first game.
