Kishore Shallow: Can his political and CWI duties co-exist?

JOEL BAILEY: This is a moment for the history books, as Shallow will be the first active president of CWI to serve as a parliamentarian, let alone act as a member of government in his home territory.

Dr Kishore Shallow is currently the President of Cricket West Indies (CWI), a role he assumed in 2023, and he is also a director of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Then, on November 27th, when the New Democratic Party won the St Vincent and the Grenadines’ general election, Shallow added a new portfolio to his profile. A man who already had a lot on his plate suddenly became a member of parliament for the constituency of North Leeward. And as if that weren’t enough, he was subsequently sworn in as the Minister of Tourism and Marine Affairs.

This is a moment for the history books, as Shallow will be the first active president of CWI to serve as a parliamentarian, let alone act as a member of government in his home territory.

That is not to say others haven’t had brushes with this scenario. Sir Wesley Hall served as a senator, parliamentarian, and government minister in Barbados before serving as president of the WICB (which is now CWI) between 2001 and 2003. Ken Gordon was a senator and government minister in Trinidad and Tobago before serving as WICB head from 2005 to 2007. And Gordon’s successor, Julian Hunte (2007 to 2013), was a councillor, mayor, parliamentarian, senator and government minister in St Lucia for almost four decades.
