West Indies Women: Potential overload

MACHEL HEWITT: Shane Deitz will be pleased that he got to see his side bowl and bat first in respective games, as well as utilising his entire squad. As preparation fixtures go, it really couldn’t have gone any better.

West Indies Women began their tri-series engagement in Ireland with strong performances against Ireland and Pakistan. As winning starts go, this one sets a promising precedent.

Wins by 8 wickets against Ireland and 25 runs against Pakistan demonstrated a level of professionalism that has, to a degree, eluded them in the past. Across the two games, two drops and a few misfields were rare blemishes on an otherwise dominant performance, leaving observers full of hope for the future.

West Indies head coach Shane Deitz had stated before the tri-series that he wanted to focus on maximising the powerplay and getting beyond the 45-run mark; his thinking clearly being that West Indies trust themselves to go strong if the platform is set at the top.

Against both Ireland (37/2) and Pakistan (61/1), there were signs of that intent. And as the chase against Ireland was a meagre 104, you could argue that 37/2 laid the foundation before Matthews went into overdrive beyond the powerplay to win the game inside 11 overs.
