A debate in modern West Indies cricket concerns when to blood the next crop of youngsters, particularly in Test cricket.

There is a consensus that since the turn of the 21st century, West Indies haven’t produced batters capable of competing at the top level of international cricket.

Finding a batter who can average 35 at the international level feels like the search for the City of Gold, never mind one who can average 40.

Yet every year, a desperate shout emanates from media and fan quarters for the latest flash-in-the-pan to be handed an international debut, regardless of whether they have a volume of cricket behind them or have been stress-tested at a higher level.
