19 run defeat – That’s what you get

MACHEL HEWITT: There is a common mistake to confuse the name and history of West Indies with the present-day side. Beating West Indies in any format in 2025 is not an achievement. In fact, for the majority of serious international sides, it should be treated as an expectation. That’s what Nepal are doing, so why aren’t the global cricket media?

I take no pleasure in saying “I hate to say I told you so.”

From the minute the Nepal squad was selected, you wouldn’t have needed a particularly deep knowledge of West Indies cricket to know they would lose at least one game, if not the series.

Eighteen months ago, a side called ‘West Indies A’ ventured to Nepal to play a then historic series and only managed to win the series 3-2. That side included experienced international pros like Roston Chase, Alick Athanaze, Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Fabian Allen, and Hayden Walsh. Whatever your thoughts on each of those players as individuals, you cannot claim they lack experience at the international level.

In contrast, of the side titled ‘West Indies Senior Men’ that has travelled to Sharjah, only the following could be described as well-seasoned international pros: Akeal Hosein, Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers, Keacy Carty, Fabian Allen, and Obed McCoy. They are facing off against a full-strength Nepal squad who know each other’s games inside out, so it should be fairly obvious which side will be the stronger.
